Pakistan floods – Situation update

Unprecedented monsoon rains commenced Thursday 29 July, with flooding affecting northern Pakistan, building over the next three days.  Flood waters made their way south in the first week of August.  Additional rains over the following weeks, causing rivers to breach, have added to the impact in southern Pakistan, mainly Sindh and Punjab provinces.

Pakistan’s population is 174 million.

  • Some 17 million people affected by flooding country-wide, according to Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)
  • More than seven million people have now been displaced in southern Sindh province – one million in the past few days alone. Out of the 23 districts in the province, 19 have so far been badly affected by the floods.
  • Area affected in Sindh province alone – almost the size of Victoria
  • Death toll from flooding has climbed to 1,639, but the number could rise substantially as flood waters recede and more bodies surface, government officials say.
  • 5.2 million people affected by flood-damaged homes [875,562 houses], according to Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)
  • More than 173,000 homes flood-damaged in Sindh province, affecting more than one million people, according to latest report from Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)
  • The UN Office for Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is reporting more than 14 million people affected by floods in six areas of Pakistan: Baluchistan, Gilgit Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan-administered Kashmir, Punjab and Sindh.
  • UN groups estimate that up to 6 million people need food and 4 million need shelter.
  • Some 53,707 new cases of suspected malaria across at least three Pakistan provinces – Punjab, Balochistan and Sindh – between the 29th July and 20th August, according to a WHO report.
