Roselina Press

Hi there, I’m Roselina. I’m a 21 year-old postgraduate student at Melbourne University. I’m studying publishing and editing, which basically means I spend most of my time learning about English grammar. But unlike most normal people, I find that really fun. My inexplicable love for grammar aside, I also have a strong interest in journalism. Thanks to the internet, times are changing for journalists, but that’s precisely why it’s so exciting to be a part of the news industry right now.

I’m really excited about the United Nations DPI/NGO conference that’s happening in Melbourne this month. Particularly because I care a lot about human rights and international development, and I know that, with only five years left to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, 2010 is looking to be a crucial year in the fight to address the needs of the world’s most impoverished nations.

The theme of the conference this year is “Advance Global Health.” Achieving worldwide improvements in healthcare is a must if we are to halve extreme poverty by 2015. After all, we won’t be able to improve international development while thousands of people die each day from curable diseases, such as malaria.

It’s my hope that the Making Health Global website will encourage young Australians to think about global health issues. I’m a big believer in the power that the youth have to make change. It’s important not to be fooled into thinking that only politicians have the power to make a difference. I hate to cite a well-worn cliché, but we are the future, and for this reason  we are absolutely entitled to be forerunners of social change. It’s up to us to explain to our leaders the kind of moral and just world we want to inherit.

I’m looking forward to following the various events and happenings of the conference over the coming days. I hope you’ll join me!
